‘God’s Garden’ a lesson in faith and humility for Ben Williams

By

What started out as a Bible lesson for Ben Williams has turned into a garden of blessings not only for himself, but for Photo by Brandon Hickscountless others.

It all began when the 38-year-old husband and father of two was reading his Bible one morning.

“My devotional reading was about the rich young ruler, who Jesus instructed to sell all that he had and give to the poor. For several days I sought to understand what lesson God wanted me to glean from the story. I finally realized that no matter how blessed we are or how little or how great we have, God intends for us to use it to glorify Him and to help others,” Williams shared as he gathered vegetables from what has become known as “God’s Garden.”

This is the second year that Williams and his family have planted a garden just to give its yield away. Every Saturday morning during the growing season he takes his baskets of produce to a small corner of the First Baptist Church parking lot in Elizabethton, where he gives it free to those who stop by. Among his assortment of vegetables are yellow and zucchini squashes, cucumbers, okra, peppers, and tomatoes, which has been supplemented by extra produce from the gardens of others.
