Despite seemingly endless rounds of wintry weather, the Tennessee Department of Transportation and contractor Charles Blalock & Sons met the deadline for opening a section of Gap Creek Road that had caused many residents to go miles out of their way to visit their neighbors.

But while motorists can once again make the trek from Elizabethton to Hampton, the “new” Gap Creek Road still has miles to go before it’s finished.

Michael Dick, Tennessee Department of Transportation district operations supervisor for the Gap Creek Road project, said the section of the project located between Dry Creek Road (Highway 361) and Tester Road had to be opened by Jan. 21, and it was.

“We opened it up last Tuesday,” Dick said on Wednesday.

Now motorists can traverse the entire length of the original Gap Creek Road.
