Dexter Lunceford, who retired from the Tennessee Highway Patrol in June of last year, has announced his intent to run against Carter County Sheriff Chris Mathes in the May 2014 Republican Primary.
Lunceford said he decided he wanted to run for the sheriff position about a year ago.
“I want to give something back to the community,” Lunceford said.
Mathes has plans to also be on the ballot and will formally announce his intent to run for re-election soon.
“I will be running, but I have not done my formal announcement yet,” Mathes said. “I welcome the challenge.”
