Retired Tennessee Highway Patrol Trooper Dexter Lunceford has announced plans to run against Carter County Sheriff Photo by Brandon HicksChris Mathes in the May 2014 Republican Primary.

Lunceford, an honorably discharged U.S. Marine Corps veteran, is 56 and originally from the Fish Springs community.
Mathes said he was not surprised by Lunceford’s announcement.

“I don’t think it’s any real surprise to anyone that Dexter would be running,” Mathes said. “He has run for several things before, but I welcome the challenge.”

Lunceford retired from the THP in June of last year and said he decided he wanted to run for the sheriff position about a year ago.

“I want to give something back to the community,” Lunceford said. “I don’t want to get into any details.
