In order to avoid a lengthy trial, where he may face a jury made of people he previously pursued for criminal charges, former Sheriff John Henson pleaded guilty to a reduced charge Friday in Carter County Criminal Court.
Without admitting guilt in the Sept. 16 incident, in which a woman accused the District 6 Constable of inappropriately touching her at a Hampton gas station, Henson said the plea to the lesser misdemeanor charge of simple assault was the easiest way to put the charge behind him.
The 10-year sheriff said the misdemeanor conviction would not affect his service as a constable.
As part of the plea bargain, Henson will serve no jail time and will be on supervised probation for six months.
