NEWLAND, N.C. — Four years of hard work in the classroom and on the gridiron have paid off for Luke Childress.
Childress, a football and academic standout at both Avery and Cloudland High Schools, was rewarded with a full-ride scholarship to Wofford College and an opportunity to play Division I football for the nationally-ranked Terriers, with whom he signed as a preferred walk-on Thursday morning in a ceremony at Avery.
A native of Roan Mountain, Childress grew up playing football for the Highlander youth club programs and was a standout in junior high through his sophomore year at Cloudland High School. He moved to Avery at the beginning of his junior season and since excelled at fullback and linebacker for coach Darrell Brewer and the Vikings through last fall.
