A first-time voter visiting the Carter County Courthouse on Monday for early voting became trapped in the elevator.

Carter County Elections Administrator Tracy Harris said the young woman had come to the courthouse to vote for the first time.

The mayor, Leon Humphrey, said he learned the woman, who could not be identified by county officials, had been trapped in the elevator when it approached the second floor.

Humphrey said he went to the elevator shaft and informed the trapped woman that help was on its way. Humphrey called 911 for assistance.

According to a report, the Elizabethton Fire Department responded to the non-emergency call at 2:50 p.m. Monday. The EFD responded “upon receiving the dispatch that a lady was stuck in the elevator.”
