Fatal crash in Hampton closes Highway 19E

1:52 pm | July 9, 2013

A head-on collision between a pickup truck and a tractor-trailer resulted in the death of one of the drivers on U.S. Highway 19E in the area between Hampton and Roan Mountain.

Initial reports suggest that the pickup, at first, collided with a county vehicle – a pickup carrying jail trusties – before crashing into the tractor-trailer, a logging truck out of Marion, N.C.

County Coroner Benny Colbaugh pronounced the driver of the pickup, a woman, who has yet to be identified, dead shortly after his arrival.

Rescue workers have closed the road while they work to contain the scene. While tending to the injured, rescue workers also attempted to contain a sizeable fuel spill.
