ETSU researcher studies health, needs of caregivers

A researcher studying people who devote so much of their time to caregiving that their own health needs don’t receive enough attention is seeking more participants.

Dr. Florence Weierbach, an assistant professor at East Tennessee State University’s College of Nursing, is studying the needs and health of rural residents who serve as caregivers to family members and friends.

Weierbach said her project, called the “People Helping Health Study,” arose from the fact that research on the topic is scant. November is National Family Caregivers Month, and each U.S. president since Bill Clinton has issued an annual presidential proclamation in honor of family caregivers.
