ETSU officially rejoins SoCon1:37 am | June 12, 2013
JOHNSON CITY – It was a festive Tuesday afternoon at the D.P. Culp University Center, as East Tennessee State’s Department of Intercollegiate Athletics was officially welcomed back into the Southern Conference.
“This is really a great day for ETSU,” said Dr. Richard Sander, director of intercollegiate athletics. “It’s kind of like coming home, because I think of all the success, all the tradition and all the rivalries that over the years have developed between ETSU and the Southern Conference members. It has been something that a lot of people remember, and that they really cherish.”
Though the Bucs have enjoyed enormous success in the Atlantic Sun Conference, the feel was never quite the same as the glory days of the SoCon.
“Today is truly an opportunity come home,” said Dr. Brian Noland, ETSU’s president. “Today is an opportunity, however, that was made possible by a lot of people in this room. I also want to take an opportunity to thank Dave Mullins.
“Dave was extremely patient with me. I had been on the job less than three weeks when we had our first meeting on our conference affiliation.”
