A Carter County Sheriff’s Department corrections officer was arrested by the Elizabethton Police Department Sunday night on drug charges, according to Carter County Sheriff Chris Mathes.

Jesse Lee Carico, 29, 112 Mount Vernon Place, Elizabethton, was charged with driving under the influence and simple possession of a Schedule II drug, according to an EPD report.

EPD Officer James Sexton reportedly found Carico passed out in a black Chevy truck, which was blocking traffic at the intersection of West Elk Avenue and West G Street at about 11 p.m.  After waking Carico, Sexton reported that he showed signs of being impaired during a field sobriety test.

Carico also granted Sexton permission to search the vehicle and a bottle with two Oxycodone pills and a plastic bag containing methamphetamine were found inside of the center console, according to the report.

Although the corrections officer is innocent until proven guilty, Mathes said Carico has been suspended without pay and benefits.
