Elizabethton Twins bus involved in fatal crash

A collision on a Florida interstate involving the charter bus carrying the Minor League local affiliate, the Elizabethton Twins, claimed the life of a vehicle’s driver who was reportedly travelling the wrong way.

EtwinsTwins General Manager and Elizabethton Park and Recreation department head Mike Mains confirmed that the crash happened at approximately 4 a.m. Tuesday as 34 players and three staff members were riding to Tennessee from Fort Myers, Fla., where the Major League Twins hold spring training camp.

Mains and Florida media outlets reported that the car was driving the wrong way on Interstate 295 near Jacksonville, Fla., and the bus driver tried, but could not avoid a collision.

“We’re grateful no one was injured on the bus, and our prayers go out to the family of the other driver,” Mains said.

He said the players are still expected to arrive in Elizabethton today, and will still conduct events scheduled for Wednesday.
