East fends off stubborn Longhorns

MOUNTAIN CITY — Sullivan East remained perfect in the Three Rivers Conference basketball race, but Johnson County battled toe-to-toe with the Patriots for three quarters on Friday night.
East caught fire late and prevailed 58-45 at Ray Shoun Memorial Gymnasium. The game was tied at 36-all, before the Patriots opened the fourth quarter on a 14-1 run to decide the outcome.
“Johnson County out-played us in every phase of the game,” East coach John Dyer said. “We didn’t play the Patriot way for 32 minutes, but most of that was because of how hard and how tough Johnson County played. Hats off to them.”
The Patriots (22-6, 9-0) haven’t lost this year and have already wrapped up the top seed for the upcoming District 1-AA tournament. Meanwhile, the Longhorns (13-17, 2-6) are regrouping down the stretch.

“That’s not bad,” Johnson County coach Todd Whittemore said. “That’s our big three. They showed up.
