Discussion over animals’ care grows heated at shelter meeting

Residents brought concerns about the care of animals in the Elizabethton/Carter County Animal Shelter to the shelter’s Advisory Board Monday, with the meeting at times becoming intense.

The communication between the community members and Shelter Director April Jones turned into heated discussions at times, and board chairman Mike Barnett and Carter County Mayor Leon Humphrey had to call the meeting back into order several times.

Former shelter volunteer Wendy Guinn questioned the board about how it is decided which animals receive emergency care and when emergency euthanasia was appropriate.

She outlined cases where she said she felt care was not provided to the animals quickly enough, which she believed left them suffering in the shelter.
