Cyclones win wild one in Region 1-AA final

An “Ugly Betty” game for ’Betsy in the opening inning would result in a “Mona Lisa” for the Cyclones in the final frame.
Elizabethton’s “10th inning masterpiece” allowed Elizabethton to pull off a remarkable 14-13 win at Joe O’Brien Field.
EHS trailed 13-10 after Greeneville scored three times in the top half. But the “Cardiac ’Clones” pulled off another Houdini and escaped with the 2013 Region 1-AA championship banner.
Fans got their money’s worth and then some on this historic night.
The two teams combined for 36 hits (20 by the Cyclones) and set the all-time state record for combined hits in a game. Plus it was Elizabethton’s first regional championship since 2007.
“We played ugly baseball,” said head coach Joe Nix. “It’s never been my philosophy — ever — but with the youth on our team, they’ve got to realize if they make a mistake we’re not pulling them. We (the coaches) told them they play ugly baseball and we need to embrace it. If we make a mistake, we said just score three or four runs to make up for it. Tonight I felt like we did that.”
