Cyclones’ Walz successfully defends backstroke title

BRISTOL — The pressure finally got to Scout Walz, temporarily, but he regrouped in impressive fashion.
After not hearing the start of the Northeast Tennessee Swimming Regional Championships 500-yard freestyle, in which he was the defending winner, Walz was relegated to making a solo pass later for a runner-up finish. However, he bounced back successfully to defend his 100 backstroke title at Viking Hall.
“I’ve been stressing out about that 500 for like the last three days,” Walz said on Saturday night. “Then messing up the start, where everyone went without me, that just kind of pushed me over. I didn’t know what I was going to do.
“I was upset, but I wasn’t going to let it hurt me in the backstroke.”
