Cyclones, Tribe look for test from District 23:47 am | February 22, 2013
The Region 1-AA basketball tournament gets underway tonight with Elizabethton and Happy Valley playing girls games at home.
The EHS boys will be inside the friendly confines of Treadway Gymnasium Saturday night while the Warriors must travel to Chuckey-Doak.
The girl’s semifinal games will be played on Monday night and the championship Wednesday at Elizabethton High School. The boys’ semifinals will be Tuesday and the title game Thursday.
The Lady Cyclones (24-4) open play Friday night at home against West Greene (9-20).
The Lady Buffaloes have gotten hammered against some middle-of-the-pack teams during the season and appear to be no serious threat to the Cyclones.
Coach Len Dugger has done an excellent job of piecing the puzzle after losing Tusculum signee point guard Morgan Depew to a torn ACL. Caley Hodge was projected to be in the starting five, but suffered a season-ending injury before the first regular-season game.
Lauren McCurry decided not to come back from a stress fracture after Christmas. EHS sputtered some in a loss to Unicoi County, but haven’t missed a beat since.
Dugger reloaded with the help of twins Kayla and Kelci Marosites. He weaned the pair in the early going before throwing them into the fire. And both have responded in a big way.
