It was a busy time for many of our sportswriters over the holidays, but all took time to vote on our annual All-Carter/Johnson County team.
Stats were compiled over the 10-game regular season in addition to all playoff games. Thirty-six players for six schools were tabbed to the elite squad. Elizabethton grabbed two of the top player honors in addition to Coach of the Year. Happy Valley, Hampton and Cloudland nailed down the other top player spots.
The Cyclones reeled off 11 consecutive wins after dropping their games to Daniel Boone and Science Hill to start the season. They fell to CAK in the state semifinals 44-34, and CAK went on to destroy Milan 48-14 in the championship game.
That was enough for Shawn Witten to be tabbed as coach of the year in 2012 over Cloudland’s Brock Pittman. Witten has now taken three EHS teams to the semifinals and participating in two as a player.
He also didn’t hesitate to insert sophomore sensation Ethan Thomas into the starting backfield to begin the season. And he responded by putting up some eye-popping numbers.
Thomas was tabbed on every ballot as our Most Valuable Player due to his 2,095 yards rushing on 268 carries and 19 touchdowns.
