Cyclones can’t hold big lead

CORRYTON — With a 20-point lead at hand, the clock couldn’t wind down fast enough for Elizabethton.
Unfortunately for the Cyclones, time stood still for Gibbs.
The Region 2-AA champion Eagles delivered the stone-cold stunner on its home court behind diminutive point guard Aaron Corum, taking advantage of missed opportunities and mistakes by the visitors with a 54-53 comeback victory to advance to the TSSAA Class AA state tournament in Murfreesboro.
“I thought we made a few careless mistakes down the stretch as far as not getting too much into the moment,” said Elizabethton coach Lucas Honeycutt. “A lot of times in these games the crowd gets into and you lose your sense of thought. We rushed a few shots when we should’ve run some clock. It’s hard for the kids to hear and they’ve got to know the situation.
“We played well enough to get it done, but down the stretch we made enough mistake. They came with it on the offensive end.”
