Cyclones breeze past ‘Horns

If absence makes the heart grow fonder, then Elizabethton’s basketball team have become close to one another over their first seven games.

Only one time has the entire squad been dressed out together. Minus their leading scorer in Aaron Miller (stress fracture), the Cyclones had little trouble romping past Johnson County 63-34 on Friday night inside Treadway Gymnasium.

The trio of Hunter Combs, Michael Wagner and Tyler Nichols would pick up the scoring slack. Eight of the nine players dressed would dent the scoring column.

Combs got ’Betsy off to good start by swishing a pair of three in the opening three minutes. His eighth point of the quarter pushed the lead to eight (12-4), and a runner by Nichols at the buzzer allowed Elizabethton to hold a 15-4 lead after one.

It wasn’t all offense that played a big role in Elizabethton’s 11-point lead. Its 6-9 center, Michael Wagner, blocked four shots and altered a couple more, forcing the Longhorns to play more of a perimeter game.
