Like a hammer driving a nail, each University High strike on Tuesday sunk Elizabethton just a little deeper until the Junior Buccaneers walked off Dave Rider Field with a 6-0 win over the Cyclones in a Region 1 A-AA clash.
The Bucs (8-1 overall, 6-0 region) scored in the fourth minute when sophomore Noah Jones headed in a corner kick by Kevin Mast for a lightning-like strike and a 1-nil lead.
EHS ( 6-5-1 overall, 3-2-1 region) made things more difficult on themselves in the 14th minute with an own goal — the first of two EHS suffered — as a Cyclone defender saw another corner kick by Mast strike him in the chest and deflect past goalkeeper Luke Broyles who was standing in for injured starter Darion Simerly.
“We knew coming in this would be a tough match to win,” said Cyclones head coach Bill McClay. “Two own goals tonight. You can’t make those mistakes against a team that has their skill level and we made mistakes early.
