President/CEO of Northeast Community Credit Union Kathy Campbell presents the Helping Teachers Teach grant check to Tina Peters, a teacher at Hampton Elementary School.

Peters’ project is to provide up-to-date, relevant, high-interest reading materials for her 6th-grade students. Because of recent budget cuts, new reading textbooks were not purchased.

The grant would help buy 30 subscriptions to Storyworks magazine published by Scholastic to use with her 105 students.

This magazine provides relevant, interesting stories in all literary genres and aligns with the new standards for instructions. It also provides printable activities and worksheets as well as videos and SmartBoard activities which go along with each story. Each issue also provides a relevant, persuasive writing opportunity as well as a comparing and contrasting activity.

She will also buy CD players with headphones for her students with disabilities to use with the audio books in the library. Many of the students have a hard time reading novels on their own, but the audio books allow them to hear the story read to them while they follow along in the book.

Northeast Community Credit Union awards $300 every month to a classroom to be utilized for classroom needs, activities, and academic enrichment. Helping Teachers Teach is open to teachers within Carter, Johnson, Unicoi, Sullivan and Washington counties that are members of Northeast Community Credit Union. Teachers can download the application at the credit union’s website: www:BeMyCU.org.
