Couple shares first dance during ‘Anniversary Prom’10:00 am | June 27, 2013
After 42 years, the Rev. Ray and Pat Amos finally shared a first dance when their First United Methodist Church congregation recently hosted a prom for the couple in honor of their anniversary.
The couple have been together since they met in 1964 in the 7th grade. They dated all through high school and married June 19, 1971.
“She was my high school sweetheart,” Ray said of Pat. “She is my only sweetheart.”
Although the couple has been together all these years, they were never able to attend a school dance or a prom together. This was a small disappointment for Pat that she had not been able to dance with the man that would become her husband.
“Every year when she would see someone dressed up for prom, she would say that could have been me,” Ray said. “It’s not really a sad thing. It was just something we would pick at each other about.”
Ray shared with members of the Young Adult Class at First United Methodist, which led to the planning and hosting of the couple’s “Anniversary Prom.” Ray said he and Pat went on a trip and returned to find their church family was busy planning the event for them.
