CHIPS: We’re here for Carter County, too

Its motto is in the organization’s name.

The leaders of Change Is Possible – known to most as CHIPS – wants Carter County residents to know it’s there for them to lean on.

Jewel DeBord, CHIPS community educator, said the Erwin-based grassroots initiative to combat domestic violence serves Carter and Greene counties in addition to Unicoi.

“All of our services cover all three counties,” she said. “We have always served these counties.”

DeBord said awareness is the most important tool they have to assist the community with any domestic violence needs.

“We want to spread more awareness because people don’t know about the services that we offer and the resources that they have available in the community,” DeBord said.

Services CHIPS offers include emotional support, educational workshops, counseling, referrals, court advocacy, victim compensation and a confidential shelter for victims of domestic violence.

“The shelter is in an undisclosed location,” DeBord said. “It’s a home setting and serves victims of domestic violence and their children as long as they are under 18 years old.
