The Butler Ruritan Club annual Soup Contest proved a hit, right down to the last bowls of chowder, chili and various other soups served during the event.

Nioka Markland, secretary for the club, provided a list of winners to the Elizabethton STAR.

First-place winner Shelby Potter made a Taco Soup that proved a hit with the judges. Potter won a $50 gas gift card and a trophy.

The second-place winner, Susan Whitney, impressed judges with her Tuscan Sausage Soup. She won a Crock-Pot slow cooker.

Kathy Hamilton, who took third place, also won a Crock-Pot.

Judges for the competition were selected from community members. Jamie Roberts, Alan Coch, and David Markland served as judges in the contest. A variety of desserts were also served.

In addition to the soups, diners at the event also sampled chicken schnitzel cooked by club members based on a recipe published in the Elizabethton STAR. |

The event also featured some fun games, including Benefit Bingo and 50/50.

The Butler Ruritan Club is located at 291 Piercetown Road above the Butler Volunteer Fire Department. Bill Benedict is the club’s current president.
