Two Butler residents were charged with taking a woman’s purse while she was putting groceries in her car at the Broad Street Food City on July 28, according to the Elizabethton Police Department.

Billy J. Moretz, 31, 239 Grindstaff Road, Butler, and Elaine R. Gregg, 35, 1044 Poga Road, Butler, were each charged with robbery.

According to the EPD press release, the woman left the Food City building at about 11 p.m. and a man grabbed her wrist and purse while she was in the parking lot loading groceries into her car.

According to police, the man told the woman to “let it go” while forcefully jerking the purse, which contained cash, credit cards and other personal items, off her shoulder.

Police said they used video surveillance tapes and witness accounts of the incident to identify Moretz, and Gregg was named as the driver of the vehicle in which Moretz arrived and left the Food City parking lot.

Moretz and Gregg are scheduled to appear in Carter County General Sessions Court on Sept. 10.
