Wayne and Linda Gay’s plan to grow a few grapes has grown into the Watauga Lake Winery.

In fact, just a few grapevines have now sprouted into nearly six acres of vineyards hosting more than 3,500 vines, and now the Gays have opened Watauga Lake Winery. In its own way, the business is a natural progression for Wayne and Linda, as they’ve been closely connected to the wine-growing regions of Italy for years.

“I really loved the look of Italian villas or Italian farmhouses with all the grapes and all the olive trees around,” Wayne said, “so I just kind of figured if we ever retired, I’d like to build an Italian-style house and put in a few grapevines because, aesthetically, it would look nice.
