Tonya Stevens, new director of the Elizabehton-Carter County Chamber of Commerce, and Keith Hart of the UT Extension Service, are heading up a drive to raise funds for the purchase of new wiring and lights for the Fraser fir, known as the “community Christmas tree.” Hart estimates the new wiring and lights will cost about $3,000.

Keith Hart of the Carter County University of Tennessee Extension Office, who oversees the maintenance of the tree, said the wires have become very brittle and many of the bulbs need to be replaced.

“It has been at least 10 or 12 years since any new wiring has been done. It will probably take about $3,000 to replace the wiring and buy new LED bulbs,” Hart said.
