Elizabethton’s big Fraser fir, which is marking its 24th year as the Community Christmas Tree, is in need of some tender, loving care from the community.
Before it can be lighted this holiday season, the electrical wiring, in addition to the lights, must be replaced. Keith Hart of the Carter County University of Tennessee Extension Office, who oversees the maintenance of the tree, said the wires have become very brittle and many of the bulbs need to be replaced.
“It has been at least 10 or 12 years since any new wiring has been done. It will probably take about $3,000 to replace the wiring and buy new LED bulbs,” Hart said.
