Best dining experiences of 2012

This week, I am taking a look back at some of the more memorable dining experiences of 2012. The entries I’ve designated among the best are all gleaned from establishments featured in the column last year.
Best Burger — Sycamore Drive-in, Elizabethton. The burgers deserve top billing on the menu at the Sycamore, which has been an Elizabethton landmark since 1951 when it first opened as a Tastee-freez franchise. Current owner Gary Hicks has his own top-secret recipe for his burgers, which are hand-patted every morning. In addition to the standard Hamburger and Cheeseburger — both single and double versions — the menu offers a a Bacon Cheeseburger, Bacon Double Cheeseburger and even a Bologna Burger. They’re not fancy — just simple, old-fashioned and delicious like a good burger should be.

Captain’s Table at Watauga Lake in Hampton is the 2012 recipient of “Best Overall Dining Experience” from the Elizabethton STAR’s weekly “Eating Out” column.

Best Pizza — This category featured a tie between Smoky Mountain Bakers and Wood Fired Pizza in Roan Mountain and Main Street Pizza Co. in Johnson City. These are two very different eateries, but they both serve up some fine pies.
