Beef ‘O’ Brady’s clips first-place Unicoi Co.


Unicoi County remains the top team in Cal Ripken League baseball, but the Blue Devils were knocked off on Friday night.

Beef O’ Brady’s took the down the Blue Devils 9-8 at T.J. Burleson Memorial Field.

In the nightcap, Avoca whipped Burgie Drugs 8-0.

Colton Miller drove in the game-winning run with one out in the bottom of the fifth inning, as Beef ‘O’Brady’s remains second in the league.

Miller batted 2 for 3 with three RBIs. He also blasted a two-run homer in the third.

Unicoi’s Owen Nicholson walked and stole second and third base to began the affair. Clay Simpson plated him.

Jesus Nunez singled and stole second, but was stranded.

Beef’s Nick Hurley was struck by Nunez, advanced on a balk and stolen base, before being driven in by Ethan Eggleston. Miller singled, advanced on a passed ball and was stranded.

In the second, Hunter Higgins and Simpson each clubbed two-run singles and the Devils went up 5-1. Simpson was left on third.

In the bottom half of that inning, Drew Broome plated a score. Another runner crossed on an error and the deficit was cut to 5-3.

Unicoi was retired 1-2-3 in the third. In the bottom half, Hurley singled and was left on second.

The Devils increased their advantage to 7-3 in the fourth. Higgins unleashed a run-scoring single and a runner crossed on an error.

In the bottom half, Beef ‘O’ Brady’s surged ahead 8-7. Miller’s home run began the flurry.

Runners crossed on an error and wild pitch tie the contest. Broome’s RBI made it 8-7.

Unicoi’s Garrett Bratton tagged a sacrifice fly in the fifth to make it 8-all. Geraldo Nunez opened that inning with a double.

Hurley was again hit, this time by Simpson. A wild pitch placed runners on second third before Miller delivered.

Jesus Nunez hurled three innings. He scattered three hits, yielded four earned runs and struck out six with two walks.

Simpson, in 11⁄3 innings, was touched for one hit and

allowed one earned run, while fanning two and walking three.

Higgins batted 2 for 2. He and Simpson each totaled three RBIs.

Hurley went the distance for Beef ‘O’ Brady’s. He yielded eight hits, five earned runs, fanned seven and walked three.

Hurley also stole three bases. Tyler Julian recorded two steals, while Broome drove in two runs.

Beef catcher Evan Sewell gunned down a baserunner attempting to steal second base in the second inning, when he hooked up with Eggleston at shortstop.

Avoca’s Kamren Lewis hurled a one-hitter, while striking out 13 in the non-conference battle.

Burgie’s Tyler Stansbury lasted 21⁄3 innings in allowing

two earned runs. He was touched for three hits and fanned five with one walk.

Cayd Pope, in 12⁄3 innings of middle relief, served up

one hit and gave up two earned runs. He struck out one and walked two.

Tre Shoun fired the final two innings. He was roughed up for seven hits, yielded three earned runs and fanned four.

Lewis walked two and hit two batters. He fanned the side in the third and sixth innings.

Burgie left two runners on in the first. It also stranded a runner on third in the fourth, and left two on in the fifth.

In the fifth, Burgie’s J.D. McAmis broke up Lewis’ nohit bit with two out. He lined a hard shot into left field.

Lewis batted 2 for 3 with three runs and two RBIs. He ripped two doubles.

Andrew Hull was 2 for 4 with three RBIs. Jordan Luttrell went 2 for 4 with two runs and an RBI.

Carter Harris also rapped a run-scoring single. Luttrell and Isaac Whitehead, who singled, each stole two bases.

Jayson Stophel also singled.
