Assessor’s ‘free’ advice? Don’t pay for those county records

A local official is cautioning residents about a letter circulating in Carter County that could lead residents to spend money unnecessarily.

Ronnie Taylor, the county’s tax assessor, said several county residents have contacted his office about a company that offers to retrieve property records for a one-time fee.

“We’ve been getting taxpayers and property owners coming in about this,” Taylor said. “They’re charging these people $89 for a copy of their deed and their records.”

What some residents may be unaware of, however, is that this information is available at the county courthouse … for free.

“They’re paying for this information when they don’t have to,” Taylor said. “If they need anything like that, they can get it from the assessor’s office or the register of deeds.”
