Apple butter makers preserving a lost art

Food historians say Americans have been making apple butter — a condiment traditionally associated with the Appalachian region — since at least the 1700s.

Jerry Poole, member of Valley Forge Free Will Baptist Church, takes his turn stirring apple butter. The church members have been making apple butter for the Seniors Ministry for almost 40 years.

There’s an art to making apple butter the old-fashioned way.

Every fall the seniors at Valley Forge Free Will Baptist Church gather outside the fellowship hall to make several runs of apple butter, which they preserve and sell to the congregation as well as friends. The apple butter making is a fundraising project for the senior ministry and is by no means a one-man show. “It takes a lot of help,” said Mark Potter, associate pastor.
