Appeals court backs granting of new trial in Campbell County school shooting

KNOXVILLE — A Tennessee appellate court has sustained a judge’s granting of a new trial in a fatal school shooting.

According to the Knoxville News Sentinel, the Tennessee Court of Criminal Appeals made public its ruling on Monday. The court backed the ruling allowing a retrial of Kenny Bartley Jr. in the November 2005 shooting that killed Assistant Principal Ken Bruce and wounded two other administrators at Campbell County High School.

Bartley was 14 when he brought a loaded pistol to school. He was 15 when his attorney and prosecutors struck a deal on the day of his trial that led to a 45-year prison term.

Testimony has shown Bartley wasn’t allowed to talk to his parents before the plea was entered.
