Summer is months away but plans are under way for this year’s Fourth of July parade.Parade-C-4x5

The parade will be held at 1 p.m. on July 4. Some of the plans are already in place and the planning committee is working to complete the rest.

“I think we can make it a great parade,” said Bob Cable, who is leading the planning committee.

Cable resumed his parade organizing duties for the first time since the 2008 parade. For the 2009-2012 parade, the Elizabethton/Carter County Chamber of Commerce held the Independence Day parade.

He told the committee he was still working to secure a grand marshal for the parade but had been in talks with public relations individuals at the University of Tennessee to try to secure Butch Jones, the head UT football coach, for the honor.

Cable said he had sent out letters to each of the high school football bands asking them to participate in the parade. The Hampton High School and Elizabethton High School bands had responded with interest but had not given a certain confirmation. The Cloudland High School band had declined to participate, citing low student participation.

“I understand that,” Cable said. “Any band participation that we get will be great. With the bands, it is hard to coordinate because they are going to be out of school.”
