As distraught onlookers gathered to watch and pray, some, like Shon Blevins and Shirley Pressnell, leapt into action to help save the child. The employees of Pine Ridge Care & Rehabilitation Center were driving by when the accident happened and immediately exited their car and began CPR before emergency personnel arrived, working diligently to save Joshua.

The boy was later pronounced dead at Sycamore Shoals Hospital.
