9:09 am | October 8, 2012

The 15K Overmountain Men Victory Run and 3K Fun Run will be held Saturday, Oct. 13, from 9 a.m. to noon. Runners (and families) are invited to pick up their race packets at a barbecue and fitness expo from 4 to 8 p.m. at Rocky Mount Historic Site on Friday, Oct. 12. The cost of the barbecue is $8 for adults and $5 for children under 5. On Saturday, packet pick-up and late registration will continue from 6 to 7:30 a.m. Buses will leave at 8:15 a.m. to take the runners to the starting point on Sycamore Shoals Road, on the north side of the river.

The race will begin at 9 a.m. A beautiful course along the Watauga River will follow, in part, the historic trail the Overmountain Men took on their way home, after defeating the British army at the battle of King’s Mountain, hence the name, “Victory Run.”

During the big race, Rocky Mount will be open for tours, and the grounds will be filled with fun activities for families and friends of runners. There will be a 3K Fun Run (pets on leashes and baby carriages are welcome), as well as opportunities to try 18th century crafts and pick a pumpkin to take home.

Costs are $25 at 15K and $12 at 3K. Group rates for schools or track groups are $15 per runner for a group of 10 or more pre-registered runners for the 15K and $10 per runner for the 3K, 10 or more pre-registered runners. Special medals will be awarded to first 200 runners in the 15K; ribbons will be awarded to all, including the Fun Run walkers and runners. The awards ceremony will be at noon at Rocky Mount.

Runners may stop off at Rocky Mount for a registration form, or download one from www. werunevents.com. Registration forms and checks made payable to Rocky Mount Living History Museum may be mailed to Rocky Mount Race Committee, P.O. Box 160, Piney Flats, TN 37686.
